As part of the implementation of a comprehensive corporate responsibility and sustainable tourism action plan, Transat A.T. Inc., one of the largest integrated tourism companies in the world and Canada’s holiday travel leader, has signed a three-year memorandum of understanding with Beyond Borders to work to eliminate the commercial sexual exploitation of children.

Transat’s commitment includes training its management team and frontline staff on the issue of child sex tourism. The training, facilitated by Beyond Borders, began in October 2010 and will be fully deployed in Canada and in Europe in 2011. The second phase of the program will be raising the awareness of customers and destination partners about this most important social issue for the travel and tourism industry. Transat has also developed internal policies addressing how to manage situations where children in the company’s destination communities may be at risk.

Transat was also a 2010 headline sponsor of the Beyond Borders Media Awards.

Beyond Borders is thrilled to partner with leading international entertainment and content distribution business, Entertainment One (eOne).

As the Canadian distributor of the film, The Whistleblower, eOne made the decision to donate $1 from every Canadian ticket sale to the film to Beyond Borders. This contribution demonstrates incredible corporate social responsibility. The company has gone beyond raising awareness through this film by supporting advocacy and action to combat the issue of child sex trafficking.

The film is inspired by actual events and stars Academy Award® winner Rachel Weisz. It’s the story of an American police officer who takes a job working as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia. Her expectations of helping to rebuild a devastated country are dashed when she uncovers a dangerous reality of corruption, cover-up and intrigue amid a world of private contractors and multinational diplomatic doubletalk.

This powerful thriller dramatically illustrates the realities of sex trafficking of women and girls as well as many of the disturbing barriers that work to prevent its end. These are issues that Beyond Borders – ECPAT Canada has been fighting for well over a decade.
